Airplanes and Rockets

Graphics students are finishing up their rockets for launch this week.
Students should launch on Thursday since Wed. is an early out.

7th Graders are building their airplanes and exploring the flight

Some limitations-

Fins must be able to fit on a 1 7/8" x 5 3/4" piece of 1/8" plywood.

Nose cone must be out of Styrofoam. Density of styrofoam is 0.7g/cu. cm.
Nose cone length cannot exceed 8".

Body minimum diameter is 1".

Body diameter cannot exceed 2 1/2"

Minimum body length is 16" not including nose cone.

All rockets must have at least 3 fins.

All rockets must use a parachute recovery system.

Rockets will launch using a single stage B6-4 engine.

Graphics students are starting the final section of drafting- Orthographic views. We will hopefully finish up shortly after changing quarters at the end of this week.

7th Grade

Students will be flying planes (assuming we don't get any more snow!) and finishing out the quarter with a video that discusses the future of flight in the world.

Final grades for the CAD unit will be based on the following.
Rough measurements- Are they turned in? Are they accurate?
Idea Drawing- Is it turned in? Does it appear thought out
Preliminary Drawing- Is it drawn to proportion? Are all of your details included?
Plus- Final Drawing Grade.

CAD Beginnings-

This week students are starting to explore Computer Aided Drafting in the lab. Most of this week will be tools and basic operations of the computer. Next week students should begin entering in their designs for the landscaping out front.

7th- Final Work Days

Tuesday will be the final day to work in the lab on woods and plastics projects. Wednesday will be an early dismissal and the first day of our Flight unit.

2/16/04 News in Technology Education @ Indian Hills

7th Grade- 7th Graders are finishing up their I.Q. testers this week. IQ testers are also commonly called a 15 hole tee puzzles.

Feb. 9th - New in Tech Ed.

8th Grade---Graphics
This week students will begin a brief unit on energy, specifically electricity. During this unit students will build small electric motors and discuss methods of generating electricity and the impacts of those technologies.

7th Grade---Exploratory Tech
This week seventh graders will be moving out of a unit on measurement and into a unit on safety. After demonstrations on tool use and safety, students will be tested on proper use of tools prior to beginning projects in woods and plastics.

8th Graphics- Two days till race day. 8th graders will be racing their CO2 Cars Thursday morning. Wednesday will be the last day to put the finishing touches on their cars. All cars will be checked against the Spec Check in class on Wed.

7th Tech.- Today will be the first day of measurement and safety procedures. After demonstrations and measurement labs, project work should begin some time next week.

Second Semester News in Tech. Ed.
This semester I will currently be teaching Graphics, Power, and Energy to 3 sections of 8th graders. We will be starting with a section on CO2 cars then moving into a brief introduction to drafting and CAD.

7th graders are finishing up their bridges this week and will begin testing on Thursday and Friday. Next week we will be watching a great video on how bridges are constructed and begin our next unit on measurement and tool safety. These two units will lead us into the 3rd of 4 units on woods and plastics.

Current happenings in Tech Ed.

8th Graphics:
Students are currently finishing up designing their CO2 Cars. After a finished design, students are cutting and shaping their cars out of blocks of pine. The official Race Day will be December 15th.

8th Exploratory Tech:
Students have just finished their gumball machines.
Ducks/Penguin pushers are due on Tuesday, December 9.
Grocery lists will be due Wednesday, December 10.

7th Grade Tech:

Technology Education Update:
Currently in Tech Ed.....
8th Grade Exploratory Tech students are finishing up their piggy banks and beginning their gumball machines.
8th Grade Graphics students are beginning CAD work and will be moving into units on CO2 Cars and Photography as the term progresses.

7th Graders this quarter have finished their unit on Flight and are now beginning the shop safety and measurement portions of the quarter.

Student boomerangs are in full swing with several students looking to trying out new designs.
